Comparing Schedule 40 and Schedule 80

This question comes up a lot. The primary difference between schedule 40 and schedule 80 is the wall thickness. Schedule 40 is generally used for household applications and is rated to handle a max 120psi to 810psi at 73 degrees (the typical municipality has a water pressure of about 70psi). The psi varies pending size of pipe (1/8” = 810psi and the max psi considerably decreases as the pipe size increases). Schedule 80 is rated for 210psi to 1230psi at 73 degrees. In some cases municipal code will require schedule 80, but most often schedule 40 will be used. It should be noted that schedule 80 is more expensive due to the required additional material used in making this pipe.

To address the wall thickness, the outside diameter of both types of pipe remains the same. It is their inside diameter that is affected.

PVC pipe is typically used for the following:

- Chemical processing,
- Plating,
- High purity applications,
- Potable water systems,
- Water and wastewater treatment,
- Drainage,
- Irrigation,
- Agricultural, and
- Other applications involving corrosive fluid transfer
